The phone shutoff scam

This is a continuing warning from the FTC’s October twenty-second alert. Scammers pretend to be government officials and may transfer you to a fake police officer. That handoff makes the lie sound real. They want your personal information and, later, money. Hang up. Don’t follow the caller’s instructions for checking their story.
